If you manage a WhatsApp group, sooner or later you need its member list somewhere more useful than a chat sidebar: a spreadsheet, a CRM, or your phone’s address book. WhatsApp has no built-in export, and copying names out of the group info panel by hand doesn’t scale past a dozen members.
This guide shows the whole process with WaGroupContacts, a Chrome extension that captures the member list you already have open on WhatsApp Web and turns it into a clean file. It takes about a minute per group.
Before you start
You’ll need three things:
- Chrome (or a Chromium browser) with the WaGroupContacts extension installed — the free plan needs no account
- WhatsApp Web signed in at web.whatsapp.com
- Membership in the group you want to export
One honest note before the how-to: export only groups you belong to, and make sure you have a lawful basis to process the members’ data — especially if you plan to contact people or you’re subject to GDPR or similar privacy laws. Being in the same group is not the same as having permission to market to everyone in it.
Step 1: Open the group’s member list
On WhatsApp Web, open the group and click its name at the top of the chat. The group info panel opens; scroll to the member section and click View all so the full member list is on screen. That list is what the extension reads — nothing is fetched behind the scenes.
Step 2: Capture with auto-scroll
With the member list open, the WaGroupContacts widget appears alongside it. You have two options:
- Scroll manually — members are captured as they load, and the progress ring counts them in real time
- Auto-scroll & capture — the extension scrolls the list for you and picks up everyone, including the rows WhatsApp lazy-loads as you go
WhatsApp loads member details (about text, profile photos) lazily, so the extension keeps watching the list and back-fills anything that appears late. Duplicates are handled automatically — each person is stored once, keyed by their number.
Tip: use named projects to keep captures from different groups separate — one project per group, each exported on its own. If the same people appear in several groups, the de-dupe across projects option merges them into a single row even when they’re saved under different names.
Step 3: Export your file
Click Export and pick a format:

The file downloads instantly. If you only need certain regions, set the country filter first — it’s populated from the countries actually present in your capture, so you can export just your Italian, UAE, or Brazilian contacts.
What’s in the export
Every export uses the same clean columns:
- Phone number — always in full international format
- Country — detected from the number’s calling code
- Name and about text — as shown in the member list
- Group — which group the contact came from
- WhatsApp link — a ready-made wa.me click-to-chat URL; one click opens the conversation without saving the contact
- Profile photo — the avatar, embedded as an image column, not just a link
Two capture filters keep the list tidy before you ever export: skip contacts already in your address book (they usually show a name but no number anyway), and exclude group admins.
Importing into iPhone or Android contacts
This is where most exports from other tools fall apart: iPhone’s Contacts import silently drops or mangles numbers that lack a country code. The vCard export here normalizes every number to E.164 (the + international format) specifically to avoid that — open the .vcf on your phone, tap import, and every number arrives intact, on iPhone and Android alike.
Is this safe for my WhatsApp account?
WaGroupContacts is capture-only. It reads the member list you already have open and never sends messages, adds contacts, or automates any action from your account. Ban reports in this space overwhelmingly involve tools that bundle extraction with bulk messaging or automated sending — this extension does neither, by design. Your captured data is yours: export it or delete it at any time.
